BACKGROUND

In 1986, Pike Place Fish Market was floundering. The owner at that time was nearly ready to give up, but as a last gasp, he contacted a consultant who convinced him he could turn the business around if he took an entirely new approach to managing his team. Instead of a top-down approach, the Pike Place Fish Market crew designed a new vision for their future, and they were empowered to get creative and make it happen.

With the whole team invested in this vision, everyone became a key contributor, leading to massive improvements in all aspects of the business. Even small changes like the time-saving step of throwing the fish to the crew behind the counter for them to wrap, turned into a crowd favorite activity, that now draws people in from around the world.
